As educators, we know that real-world scenarios are an important aspect of learning. Giving learners an opportunity to take the knowledge and concepts we’ve taught them and then apply them in a real-world scenario creates a relevant link between a concept and real life. And when we do this, it creates a deeper understanding of the concepts we’re teaching. However, when trying to creatively generate all of these fabulous real-world simulations and activities, let’s face it: educators are busy, and we get writer’s block too!
I am loving AI for brainstorming—and even if you’re not a full-on fan, it can be a GREAT simple tool to help us generate ideas for creating real-life learning scenarios that are going to elevate the learning experience of our students. Today, I’m going to give you three.
1. Simulations
Simulations can be used to replicate real-life situations that your learners are going to encounter in their professional lives. For example, an AI program can create a simulation where students are placed in the position of a human resources manager, and they have to conduct an interview and make decisions on hiring. AI will start you off with a whole script—huge time saver.
2. Role Playing & Case Studies
AI can also generate fun ideas for interactive case studies, where multiple scenarios can be created that allow learners to brainstorm practical solutions to complex problems. For example, you could simulate an episode of The Shark Tank where students take on the roles of entrepreneurs, investors, and marketing executives, all working together to develop and pitch a new product or service to a panel of judges.
3. Virtual Experiments
In advanced chemistry classes, instructors will often demonstrate various forms of chemical reactions and chemical interactions for students; however, students themselves are not allowed to replicate the experiments because of possible dangerous outcomes ( and anyone who knows me would attest that I would definitely be the student who accidentally blew up the lab). So in the classrooom, we just get to watch. With AI technology, you can generate fun science experiment ideas that your learners can safely simulate in a virtual environment. So they get to see the chemical change and analyze the corresponding data, but from doing and experiencing the experiment themselves.
So, hopefully, this has got you thinking about how you can use AI to create real-life learning scenarios and activities that will increase your learner engagement and retention of the concepts you are teaching.
As the adage goes—I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand.
